Can We Have More Than One GPO?

CAN WE HAVE MORE THAN ONE GPO?

What Independent Kidney Care Providers Should Know Before Assuming the Answer is "No"

Many dialysis organizations and nephrology practices assume that joining a Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) means they are locked into a single arrangement forever.

The reality? It depends on the terms of your agreement.

Some organizations discover they can participate in a secondary GPO, utilize contracts in specific categories, or explore alternatives when their current agreement no longer aligns with their needs.

Before assuming your options are limited, take a closer look.

REVIEW YOUR CURRENT AGREEMENT

Use this checklist to better understand your organization's flexibility.

 Exclusivity Language

Does your agreement require all purchases to flow through one GPO, or only certain categories?

Look for terms such as:

  • Exclusive participation

  • Sole source

  • Mandatory utilization

  • Preferred vendor requirements

□ Category-Specific Commitments

Some agreements apply only to specific products or services.

Ask:

  • Are pharmaceuticals treated separately?

  • Are medical supplies included?

  • Are there carve-outs for certain vendors or categories?

 Minimum Purchase Requirements

Determine whether your organization has spending obligations.

Review:

  • Minimum volume commitments

  • Utilization thresholds

  • Compliance requirements

  • Performance expectations

□ Contract Term and Renewal Dates

Many organizations overlook important timing provisions.

Identify:

  • Effective date

  • Renewal date

  • Automatic renewal language

  • Required notice periods for changes or termination

□ Flexibility to Add Additional Programs

Your agreement may allow participation in complementary purchasing arrangements.

Consider:

  • Does the agreement prohibit secondary GPO participation?

  • Are there exceptions?

  • Have you confirmed this interpretation with legal counsel or your procurement team?

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR TEAM

  • When was the last time we reviewed our GPO agreement?

  • Do we understand how our savings are calculated?

  • Are we receiving value in the categories that matter most to us?

  • Do our current contracts support our evolving business needs?

  • Are there opportunities we're not exploring because of assumptions rather than facts?

YOU MAY HAVE MORE OPTIONS THAN YOU THINK.

Exploring your purchasing strategy does not necessarily mean replacing your current GPO. For some organizations, it means identifying opportunities to complement existing agreements. For others, it may reveal that it's time to evaluate new solutions.

The first step is understanding what your agreement actually says.
